Luxury Safari

We endeavor to make your visit to HillsNek Safaris on Amakhala Game Reserve both a memorable and special one as no visit to South Africa is complete without a safari experience.

In order to prepare you for your first safari, here are a few answers to the most frequently asked questions:

HillsNek Safaris is situated in a Malaria Free area, so anti-malaria medication is not necessary. The mosquito nets covering the beds are purely there for added romance and aesthetics.

We are fortunate to be in one of the most temperate regions in South Africa. Summer temperature (Oct – March) during the day may go as high as 36C/97F. Sunrise is approximately 05h30 and sunset at 19h30. Winter (May – August) has some beautiful warm sunny days, but mornings and evenings can be cool. The average rainfall is 550mm per year, and falls mainly in the summer months. Game viewing can be enjoyed the year round.

Dress is informal and comfortable. Bring closed toed shoes – sandals are not recommended – and a warm windproof jacket and jerseys for game drives. Blankets are provided on the drives if needed. Light clothing and a swimming costume is recommended for the summer months (for the outdoor showers and pool). A good hat and a high SPF sun block are highly recommended. Be prepared for temperature extremes.

Game Drives are conducted in specially modified four wheel drive vehicles designed to carry up to 8 -10 guests. The vehicle does not have a fixed roof or sides and allows for maximum all-round visibility. The capabilities of the vehicle are such that it is able to traverse through fairly rough terrain, with the exception of ecologically sensitive areas, particularly after rain.

You could find yourself getting close to big game – this should not alarm you provided that you observe the do's and dont's as discussed by your ranger prior to and during the safari. At no time, unless otherwise indicated by your ranger, should you leave the vehicle.

Length of Stay

A minimum of a two-night stay is recommended to experience and appreciate what HillsNek Safaris has to offer and to explore Amakhala Game Reserve fully.

There is no access at the lodge to TV, internet, fax or a landline telephone. Cell phone reception is available however and your ranger & host have contact if an emergency arises.

Please drink only the bottled water provided. Your bath water may be a slight shade of yellow – this is normal as the bathing water is drawn from the river and then filtered through a purification system.

Children are welcome at HillsNek Safaris and we embrace the opportunity to foster a love of conservation and the bush from a young age.

All children 10 years and younger are treated to a ‘Ranger Bag’ and a child-friendly menu is available.

Please be advised however of the following restrictions in regards to game drives:

Children aged 6 to 11 may join their parents on game drives at the lodge manager and rangers discretion.

For safety considerations, children 5 years and younger may join drives only where a sole use vehicle is booked.

All children under the age of 12 are required to share a tent with their parents.

Medical facilities including full hospital, consultant and general medical services are available in Port Elizabeth.
